Our Customers Questions

What causes cracked heels and thick skin on the feet?

Cracked heels and thick skin are usually caused by repeated pressure from standing or walking for long periods.
The skin dries out and cracks.

New Zealand’s climate is another contributing factor. People who spend a lot of time on their feet — tradies, farmers, nurses, hikers, and active people — are most affected.

The skin thickens as protection but cracks when it becomes too dry and inflexible. When we walk these cracks continually split and hurt.

How do the Movember donations work?

The deal is simple: For every Sole Saver bundle we sell we donate $1 to the Movember charity.

At Sole Shield we have many friends that are tradies, farmers and hardworking Kiwis that keep the lights on and water running.

We know first hand some of the struggles in this community and this is our way of giving back.

Will this work for cracked heels from gumboots or work boots?

Yes. Sole Shield is a system that sorts cracked heels. Gumboots, steel-caps, tramping boots — anything that traps heat and moisture or rubs the same spot all day makes skin thicken and crack.

The fix doesn't change: soften the skin, remove the built-up hard skin, then repair and lock in moisture overnight.

Stick to the 3-step system, get the skin under control and you will be good to work in those boots all day.

Why do we use Tallow in our balm?

Our Heel Rescue Balm works differently. Natural deodorised beef tallow and shea butter are close in structure to your skin's own oils — so they work with your skin and soak right in.

Most pharmacy balms lean on urea to pull moisture in from the outside. Ours doesn't use urea at all. Just a tallow and shea butter base + Allantoin, this feeds your skin near identical fats and oils which deeply hydrates and sort's those heels.

Is it safe to remove hard skin from my heels myself?

Yes, if you do it properly it's very easy to do.

Soften the skin first — a warm soak or a layer of balm works — then remove it gently with a proper tool like our Sole Shaver and/or pumice stone, using light, short strokes. It removes 0.5mm layers per pass.

Never use open razor blades or scissors on dry skin; that's how people cut themselves or take off too much at once. Stop straight away if you hit sensitive skin or see any bleeding.

It's best to remove thick skin slowly over a week or two.

How long does it take to sort cracked heels?

Most people notice softer, less rough heels within 7–10 days of consistent daily use with our Sole Saver Kit.

Deeper cracks typically take 2–4 weeks to show clear improvement.

The key is removing the thick and rehydrating new growth using the full system (Skin Shaver or Pumice Stone + Heel Rescue Balm + Moisture locking Gel Heel Socks).

Combined these give faster and better results than just a single product alone.

How does the 30 day money back guarantee work?

The 30 day money back guarantee is simple.

If you don't see any results within 30 days, return the products to us and we will give you a full refund.

It only applies to the Sole Saver bundle.

If you're not seeing any results I would appreciate the opportunity to call you and discuss how we can get you back on your feet, learn how we could improve the products and what didn't work for you.

If you are unsatisfied and need to return please fill out a form through the contact section on the website.

Ethan

“Fifteen years on the tools and my heels were proper rough — thick skin, cracks that regularly stung. Did the full process exactly as told: warm soak to soften, Skin Shaver on short light strokes to clear the dead stuff, then thick layer of the tallow balm and cotton socks every night. After 9 days or so the cracks had closed up and I could walk without feeling every step.”

“Dry wind and long days in the paddocks had my heels cracked bad — jandals one minute, gumboots the next. Followed Taylor's advice and used the heel shaver to get rid of the skin, followed by the balm and socks. Skin is looking and feeling much better.”

“Twelve-hour shifts wrecked my heels every winter, mainly when the skin dried out. Pharmacy creams never lasted. Followed the Sole Shield simple 3 step process and wow it worked. After a month the splitting stopped and my heels felt miles better. The Balm smells great too! I use the pumice stone a few times a week to stop regrowth.”
