How to Remove Thick Skin From Your Heels Safely (Without Overdoing It)

Thick, hard skin on your heels builds up fast in New Zealand. Dry wind, jandals, work boots, farm work, and long days on your feet all take their toll. Over time this dead skin forms a tough barrier that locks moisture out and eventually cracks.

The trick isn't ripping it all off in one go. It's removing it safely, a bit at a time, and following up with proper repair. Here's the method we use at Sole Shield.

The Safe 3-Step Sole Shield Method

Soften First

Soak your feet in warm water for 10–15 minutes or apply a thin layer of Heel Rescue Balm and wait 5–10 minutes. Never work on completely dry, hard skin.

Personally I found the thick skin the softest as soon as I took my boots off after a long day and this is when i would remove it.

Gently Remove with the Sole Shaver

The Sole Shield Skin Shaver is our stainless steel heel planer. This tool easily removes 0.5mm of skin each pass with a replaceable razor blade.

  • Hold it at a low angle.
  • Use short, light strokes only on the thick areas.
  • Let the tool do the work — don't press hard.
  • Stop immediately if you see pink skin or feel the skin getting sensitive.

The Sole Shaver is designed to mainly target thick, dead skin. Go slowly over a week or two rather than trying to remove everything in one go.

If your heels feel a bit sensitive afterward, that's usually a sign you took off more than they were ready for. Ease up next time and give your skin a chance to settle before your next pass.

Repair and Lock It In

Apply Heel Rescue Balm generously straight after shaving. Pull on the Moisture-Locking Heel Socks, ideally overnight. The socks trap the balm against your skin so it has all night to sit in and do its work, instead of rubbing off on the sheets.

Maintenance

Once your heels are feeling more like healthy, flexible skin again, keep them that way with regular use of the Heel Rescue Balm and Moisture-Locking Heel Socks. For many people, a quick pass with the Pumice Stone once or twice a week is enough to help keep thick skin from building back up. Save the Sole Shaver for when you've got heavier build-up to deal with.

Most people notice visible improvement in 7–14 days with consistent use and dramatic improvement over the following month.
